How to Choose the Right Type

In this article, we’ll answer: What is a lamp holder (socket)? What types are there? And how can you pick the right one for your fixture?

🔌 What Is a Lamp Holder (Socket)?

A lamp holder is the electrical part that connects the bulb to power. It holds the bulb securely and lets electricity flow safely to light it up.

The most common types are E27, E14, G4, G9, and GU10. In Europe, E27 and E14 are the most widely used. In USA, E26 and E12 are the most widely used.

They’re usually made of brass or copper and come in different sizes for different bulbs — from home lamps to commercial lighting systems.

🧩 Common Lamp Holder Types

Code Common Name Region Description
E27 Standard screw base Europe Large screw base used in most home fixtures
E14 Small screw base Europe Smaller version used in chandeliers and wall lamps
E26 Medium screw base USA Similar to E27 but slightly smaller thread
E12 Candelabra base USA Small base for decorative or candle-style bulbs
GU10 Twist-lock base Global Used in spotlights and recessed ceiling lamps
G9 / G4 Pin base Global Used in compact fixtures and decorative lamps

💡 Fun fact:
The letter E stands for Edison, and the number shows the diameter in millimeters (E27 → 27 mm wide).

🪙 How to Identify Your Socket

You can easily guess your socket type by size:

  • A large coin (≈ 27 mm, like a US quarter) → E26 / E27
  • small coin (≈ 14–17 mm, like a dime) → E12 / E14

⚠️ Safety tip:
Never touch or measure the socket while it’s connected to electricity. Always compare visually and safely.

💡 How to Choose the Right LED Bulb

1. Socket Type: Make sure the bulb matches your fixture’s socket (E27, E14, E26, etc.).

2. Color Temperature (Kelvin):
Kelvin (K) shows the color of the light:

  • 2700–3000 K → Warm white (relaxing, cozy light)
  • 4000 K → Neutral white (balanced for everyday use)
  • 6500 K → Cool white (bright daylight look, ideal for offices)

3. Brightness (Lumens): Lumens show how bright the bulb is — not watts. The higher the lumens, the brighter the light. Example: 800 lumens ≈ old 60W incandescent bulb .

🌍 Summary

Choosing the right lamp holder ensures safety, performance, and compatibility. Whether you use E27 / E26 for general lighting or E14 / E12 for decorative fixtures — always check the base type before buying your LED bulb.
